Saturday’s game was a heart breaker.  The Wolf Pack fell to the Springfield Thunderbirds by the final of 5-4.  Springfield scored the go ahead goal with five seconds remaining in the third.  That was brutal.  The Pack’s losing streak is extended to three games.  Alexandar Georgiev takes the loss in net as he stops 24 of 29 shots.  Eric Selleck, Scott Kosmachuk, Joe Whitney, and Neal Pionk scored for Hartford.

Game Recap

The first twenty is shaky for the club.  There was sloppy play and passes.  Hartford was playing different, with jump.  At 7:03, Eric Selleck gave Hartford their first lead of the night.  He had a terrific shot to give Hartford a 1-0 lead.  Caleb Herbert and Steven Fogarty register the assists.  Then at 8:05, Springfield ties the game at one.  Then moments later at 9:16, the Thunderbirds grab a 2-1 lead.  Just like that, Hartford is down.  The Pack were struggling early in the contest.  The rest of the frame had good opportunities for both clubs.  The score remain unchanged after twenty.  Shots favor Hartford 14-8.

Both clubs change their play and style.  The period was tight.  Hartford continues to have power play opportunities.  Unfortunately, they were lost with the man advantage.  Springfield kept it simple and figure out the Pack’s game plan.  At 7:18, Hartford scored a power play goal.  Scott Kosmachuk tucked the puck in net to tie the game at two.  John Gilmour had the lone assist.  The rest of the second was scoreless.  A huge third is coming up.  Shots favor Hartford 25-22.

The third is a heart breaker.  There was back and forth on the score sheet.  At 3:32, Springfield retook the lead with a quick goal, 4-2.  Then moments later on the power play at 4:25, Hartford tied the game at three.  Joe Whitney buries the rebound, with the assists two Chris Langkow and Adam Tambellini.  Hartford is buzzing in the early stages of the third.  Hartford had plenty of power play opportunities as well.  At 9:39, Neal Pionk’s long shot got through for his first pro goal.  John Gilmour and Gabriel Fontaine register the assists as Hartford leads the game 4-3.  Late in the game killed the Pack’s momentum.  At 14:54 the Thunderbirds even the game at four.  Both clubs continue to exchange opportunities.  Late in the game, both clubs were close on converting.  Then the unthinkable happened.  At 19:55 the Thunderbirds shot the goal on net from a distance and slips past Alexandar Georgiev.  With five seconds left in the game, Springfield retook the lead of 5-4.  Some ending.  Wow.  I was shocked with  what has happened.  Shots favor the Wolf Pack 48-29.

Final Thoughts

This was a game that should have been won.  The defense struggles.  Alexandar Georgiev was off his game and was shaky in net.  The struggles continue for the young Hartford club.  They will have a while to dwell on the game.  Then right back at it next week.

Hartford is back in action on Friday against the Providence Bruins at 7:05 pm.
