The Pack snapped their six game losing streak after a thriller tonight against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms! The Pack pulled out a 4-3 shootout victory against Lehigh Valley. Marek Mazanec gets the win in net as he stops 28 of 31 shots. In the shootout, he was a perfect three for three. Marek Mazanec returns to the crease after a lengthy injury that had him out at least two months. Filip Chytil, Cristoval Nieves, and Dan DeSalvo scored for Hartford.
The first twenty was the worst for Hartford. The Pack came in sluggish and was outplayed by the Phantoms. The club was chasing the puck consistently and was not matching up well against Lehigh. The Phantoms scored 2:16 into the contest. Lehigh Valley was buzzing throughout the first. The Pack generated limited chances and came close. Shots favor the Phantoms 10-4 after one.
The second period was a different ballgame. Both clubs came out stronger, with Hartford having the upper advantage. The Pack tied the game at 5:03 as Filip Chytil had a breakaway and converted on the opportunity. Cole Schneider had the lone assist. Then moments later at 6:13, the Phantoms retook the lead, 2-1. The Pack answered back with another goal at 6:48. Cristoval Nieves converted on the second chance after the Phantoms made the original save to tie the game at two. Scott Kosmachuk recorded the lone assist. The Pack were buzzing afterwards. Dan DeSalvo converted on a solid shot to give Hartford a 3-2 lead. Simon Davis and Lias Andersson recorded the assists. The rest of the frame was quiet. Both clubs were playing well, exchanging quality opportunities. Both goalies and their goal posts were at the right place at the right time. Shots were tied apiece at 17.
The third was defensive and still had open chances for both clubs. The Phantoms tied the contest 55 seconds into the third. Both clubs were close on getting another goal and both goalies were standing tall. Hartford missed golden opportunities as well, of wide open nets or chances on the two on one. They were getting close, but missing. Marek Mazanec was doing well in net and kept the situation under control. After three periods of play, the game was going to overtime tied at three. Shots favor Hartford 31-28.
Overtime was tense. Both clubs had surges and came close to ending the game. Neither club was able to execute fully. Shots apiece were three aside in the extra session. Shots favor the Pack 34-31.
Hartford shot first in the shootout. All three Phantom players were stopped. Scott Kosmachuk and Filip Chytil were stopped. Dan DeSalvo had the lone goal in the shootout in round three. The Pack pull out a win!
This was a thrilling game to watch. The Pack showed fight and battled till the end after a disappointing first period. The club worked hard and adjusted to the Phantoms as the game progressed. It was nice to see Marek Mazanec get his first win back too after being out a while from injury. Overall a good night around the club.
The Pack are back at it tomorrow at 7:05 as they take on the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on the road.
