At the beginning of last night’s game, New York Rangers fans learned that Mats Zuccarello was not in the lineup and was scratched for the game. We knew he was a game time decision, but knowing the type of player Zuccarello is, I was shocked to hear that he was not in the New York Ranger’s Home Opener lineup. Now that he was scratched this raised a lot of questions in people’s minds since it was not discussed at all. Later to find out that he was “day-to-day, with an undisclosed injury”.

On Thursday night in St. Louis, we saw Mats Zuccarello take on T.J. Oshie in his “first and last NHL fight”. Zuccarello is not a fighter so did he obtain this injury during the fight against the 5 foot 11 St. Louis Blues, T.J. Oshie? Or is he injured from the hit from a Blues player that caused him to leave the ice immediately, favoring his right arm? But, after being taken to the locker room, he was back in the game.

Then on Saturday night, he was getting roughed up and targeted again. He took a ton of hard hits from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Once again, Zuccarello took hit after hit and still continued to play. And then on Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs was scratched. So now my thinking since it has come out that Zuccarello has an “undisclosed injury” is that he has a concussion. The New York Rangers, usually try very hard to keep concussions under wraps until they are sure on the diagnosis.

Being a Mats Zuccarello fan, I am trying to be as positive as possible and hope that it is not a concussion. It would be devastating for our lineup to lose another strong player. Derek Stepan has been out since preseason, Dan Boyle broke his hand during the season opener and now Mats Zuccarello could be out for a significant amount of time as well. Let’s hope for the best Blueshirt fans and let’s hope our “Hobbit” is not too hurt and will return to the lineup sooner rather than later.
