With the new season quickly approaching and roster spots basically set, there is one question which I am sure fans are waiting to have answered. The question I am talking about is who will receive the “A” on their sweater now that veteran winger Martin St. Louis has decided to retire.

There are obviously many options which could be a good fit. We have a phenomenal defenseman like Kevin Klein who is a crucial part of the New York Rangers line up. Although, he was certainly not himself during the 2014-2015 playoff run, after suffering a broken arm at the end of the regular season, he is still a top defenseman but I am not sure what his presence is like with his teammates. Another possibility could be veteran left-winger, Rick Nash. While his performance during the playoff run last season was far from impressive, he had a stellar regular season, scoring 42 goals and had 27 assists as well. Derick Brassard is another option who should not go unnoticed. The New York Rangers center had 19 goals and 41 assists, which to me shows that he is a team player with more assists than goals.

Now while all of these choices are excellent possibilities, there is only one guy, in my opinion, that deserves the “alternate captain” title; that guy is Mats Zuccarello. He is a fan favorite, you can always hear a “ZUUUUUUCCCC” chant whether he has done something crucial in the game or just touched the puck. When Zuccarello was out during the 2014-2015 playoff run due to a serious head injury, the fans weren’t the only ones who could tell that something was missing. Players like Brassard commented, that he is the heart of this team and it was clearly noticeable. I think Mats Zuccarello is a leader on and off the ice, although small in stature, there is something that is ginormous and that is his heart and passion for the game.

I am excited to see who, in fact, will get the alternate captaincy honors, but clearly there is one choice for me. The 2015-2016 season will be here before we know it and we will soon have an answer to the question, who will receive that last “A”? As always, Let’s Go Rangers!

Should Zuccarello get the vacant "A"?
