Originally, Zuccarello was an undrafted player in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) who signed with the New York Rangers in 2010. He remained in Europe and played a short stint in the KHL, The Russian Hockey League, only to get the call from the Rangers, in 2013. After the lockeout shortened season, Zuccarello signed a one year deal last spring after filing for arbitration.
Zuccarello had a stellar season as a left wing for the third line of the New York Rangers. He meshed well with the team by being able to see plays and anticipate passes faster than his opponents. He was absolutely effective in his role on the team and in his line; usually with Derick Brassard and Benoit Pouliot. He was a big goal scorer but more than that, Zuccarello was the player setting up goals for his line-mates.
Mats Zuccarello was absolutely worth the price the New York Rangers paid for him. Zuccarello should stay a New York Ranger because of all he brings to them team. He has such a presence on the ice, defensively and certainly offensively. Zuccarello is only starting to reach his potential and this 2013-2014 will only be a jumping off platform for Zuccarello. After the year he had, he deserves a raise but also he deserves some security in years from the New York Rangers. Zuccarello should at least be signed to a 2-year deal.
